"Two days and one night of uninhibited debauchery," it promised. "In the bus. In the bath. Under the dinner table. Come join our orgy." The temptation, reports Shukan Jitsuwa, was simply too great for the 42-year-old salaryman we'll call Mr. T. Phoning for more information, he was informed that the tour would be packed with promiscuous young females. Bathing facilities at the hot springs hotel would be completely co-educational. And not only would participants wear their birthday suits to the dinner party that evening; they would eat each other for dessert. All this, and no doubt more, for a paltry 60,000 yen. Who could resist? The day after he transferred the funds to the organizer's bank account, T was called and told to wait for the bus a few minutes before 2 p.m. at the west exit of Tokyo's Ikebukuro Station. His er, chest, throbbing with anticipation, he went to the appointed place. Half an hour went by, but the bus failed to materialize. Feeling the stirrings of concern that he might be the victim of a swindle, he phoned the organizer but got no answer. When he went to the advertiser's address, he discovered that no such company existed. Unhappy ending. A 37-year-old businessman responded to an ad for a "matchmaking club" whose registered female members made such tempting offers as, "I want to keep my family together but just love to play around. I was once scouted as a model and have confidence in my figure. Housewife, age 24." Best of all, the club insisted that the trysts from these match-ups would cost male members nothing more than the 14,000 yen initiation fee, dinner for the lady, and - if the two hit it off - the cost of the hotel room. The man submitted his profile and waited for opportunity to knock. And waited. When nothing happened, he noticed fine print on his receipt that read, "If you aren't 'invited' within three months, there's a possibility that no woman chose you for this round. We advise you to re-submit." Registration price for the second round was 10,000 yen. But by this time the man decided to cut his losses. For those who do manage to score, sometimes an even worse fate awaits. While patronizing an S&M club, a 34-year-old cram school instructor was approached by a lovely young "queen" who promised him the thrills of a lifetime. One week later they met at a hotel with specially equipped rooms, wherein sensei was forced to endure such glorious forms of humiliation as being obliged to strip naked, don a dog collar and be led around the room on a leash. The two parted with a pledge to meet again soon. The call that came several days later, however, was from a man who offered to sell him snapshots commemorating his more indelicate experiences at the hotel. "Of course, we don't want you to feel obligated," the voice said. "I'm sure the parents of your students would enjoy looking at them just as much as you would." To avoid that singular form of humiliation, he wound up paying a whopping 1 million yen for the photos and original negatives. Good times, Shukan Jitsuwa concludes, ought to carry warning labels.
