Japan's weeklies can carry some pretty sick stories, but few have stooped so far as the exclusive interview Asahi Geino (7/31) has run with a self-professed date rapist.
Though it hardly has a reputation for impeccable veracity, the men's weekly claims that a 25-year-old man it identifies only by the pseudonym Masanori Kurokawa has made it a habit to drug and violate unsuspecting women.
"I only ever use drugs when it looks like a woman I've spent a lot of time and money on is going to get away from me. I hate all the small talk you have to go through. Everybody around me is doing it. If you think about it, (rape) is just another way of picking up a woman," the self-proclaimed date rapist tells Asahi Geino.
Kurokawa, according to the weekly, dresses in the regulation dark suit of the salaryman and speaks in a calm, reassured voice that provides an appearance belying the demon he really is.
"Chatting up is the easiest way to find a woman. I aim for women who turn up to a club or pub alone. They've got nothing better to do and that's why they're there. I never go near anybody I know. There are repercussions to deal with, you know," he tells the weekly. "I offer to pay for her if she'll join me. Once we start drinking, I just go along with what she says until the conversation gets interesting. Once I know she's drunk, I wait until she heads off to the toilet and then I slip some sleeping pills into her drink."
"I can't go into too much detail, but the drugs I use are prescription drugs sold over the Internet. They cost from 5,000 yen to 6,000 yen for a pack of 10. I've bought several different types, but I only use one or two pills at a time. I use the pills depending on how well they work. The women are all drunk, so the pills start to take effect after about 15 minutes. That's when I invite them out to some other place, but actually use that as a ruse to get them into my car."
"Normally, I would only ever do them in a hotel. That way, when they wake up, they'll think they came here with me because they were drunk. They weren't actually drunk, but it's vital to make the women think what they've done has been consensual."
"I always use a condom. That makes it look more as though it was consensual. But the only reason I really use a rubber is because I'm scared of picking up some sort of disease."
Kurokawa then goes on a long and detailed spiel about how over the past year he has raped some 30 women from schoolgirls to those in their 30s. Experts warn his warped ways could lead to jail.
"Even if he takes these women to hotels, simply drugging them to have sex is the equivalent of rape," Nihon University law professor Hiroshi Itakura tells Asahi Geino. "And if he has committed several counts, he could face a jail term of anywhere from two to 20 years upon conviction."
Not that Kurokawa seems particularly perturbed.
"Rape? No, it's just a difference of opinion. If the women didn't like me, they wouldn't drink with me when I first approached them. Women want to have sex with guys, too. All I'm doing is drinking with someone and we gradually develop a mutual lust for each other," he says.
Rape case numbers in Japan have skyrocketed annually since 1997. But these are only ever the reported instances and the real numbers are, without doubt, far higher than has been publicly disclosed. The situation is also worsened by the presence of men such as Kurokawa, who mistake successful wooing of a woman with rape. But Kurokawa sees no need to change his ways.
"I don't feel anything in particular," the fiend tells Asahi Geino. "I'll keep picking up women this way until I get sick of it. I don't know how long it'll take before it gets boring, though."
