この公演はもともとロシアからコミッサルジェフスキーを演出家として招くはずだったが
彼に対してパリからロンドンよりも良い条件でオファーがあったため、断られて生まれた舞台である。
しかし、その舞台は予想に反して大成功を収めている。
むしろ、ロシアよりもアイルランドの『桜の園』方が素晴らしいという意見さえある（Margaret Webster）
公演はウエストエンドのRoyalty Theatreでも上演され
合計100回以上の公演を行った。
ロンドンで最初のチェーホフ作品の成功例と言える。
