若い世代の観客に向けて作成された『桜の園』
演出家Saint-Denisの解釈が多分に含まれており、感傷的な面を排除した舞台になった。
喜劇として、漸進的で劇場の底力を発展させるような舞台を目指していた。(p.129)

もともとは1938年の三人姉妹に続く上演として準備されていたが、戦争により中断。
リハーサルの2週間前のことだった。(Loehlin:p.129-130)

劇評の注目を集めているのは、やはりラネーフスカヤとガーエフの2人。
しかし、それはあくまでも喜劇的な存在としてのキーパーソンになっている。
