>しかし1873年に作られた、商品化のためのプロトタイプ機(図1.7 ( a ))では、鍵盤上の文字配列は、若干の例外を除いて今日のものの模式(図1 ( c ))とほとんど変わっていない(図1 ( a ))。すなわち Qwerty 配列の上段からみて行くと、主要文字としてはわずかにR、A、Z、X、Mの五つのキーが今日と異なった場所にある。また当時の未熟な機構の反映でもあり、かつ1本または2本指打ちで使うので、そのときにすぐスペースが打てるように、スペース・バーが鍵盤の全幅を占めているのも異なっている。
>その後レミントン社から発売になった1874年のモデルの配列図1(b)では、今日の Qwerty との差はさらに縮まり、X、C、Mの3字だけになっている。
