+ロングテール理論
インターネットを利用したネット販売などにおいては、膨大なアイテム（商品）を低コストで取り扱うことができるために、ヒット商品の大量販売に依存することなく、ニッチ商品の多品種少量販売によって大きな売り上げ、利益を得ることができるという経済理論。ロングテール効果、ロングテール現象、ロングテール経済、ロングテール市場という形でも使われる。
一般に商品販売では「80対20の法則」が成立することが知られ、このためABC分析などを行って売り上げ下位のアイテムを“整理”することが必要だといわれていた。これは売り場面積やバックヤード在庫などの物理的制約があって限られたアイテムしか扱うことができず、かつ在庫（店頭在庫含む）には固定費が掛かるために、それを賄うだけの在庫回転率のあるアイテムでなければコスト的に見合わなかったからだ。
しかし、オンラインビジネスでは無限ともいえる売り場スペース（Webサイトなど）を用意することができ、地代の安価な場所に在庫スペースを設置することができるため、従来の物理的制約の多くを乗り越えることができる。特にデジタルコンテンツのダウンロード販売のような在庫固定費をほとんど無視できるビジネスでは、数年に1回しか売れないようなアイテムであっても、データベース上に登録しておくだけでよいなら“整理”する必要はなく、そうしたアイテムを数多く用意することで大きな売り上げを期待することができる。
ロングテールとは、このような従来ならば“死に筋”と呼ばれたニッチ商品（群）のことをいう。これは縦軸に販売数量、横軸にアイテムを販売数量の多い順に並べたグラフを描いた際に、販売数量の少ないアイテムを示す部分が長く伸びるさまをロングテール（長い尻尾）に見立てた呼び名である。
オリジンは米WIRED誌の編集長だったクリス・アンダーソン（Chris Anderson）で、2004年10月の同誌に「the Long Tail」という記事を執筆し、オンラインDVDレンタルショップの米Netflixやオンライン書店のアマゾン・コムなどでは、リアルビジネスとは異なる収益構造が見られることを指摘した。アンダーソンは、ここでエンターテインメント産業の未来はニッチマーケットにあると主張している。
ただし、ロングテール現象はデジタル・エンターテインメントだけに見られるものではなく、広告や一般サービス、ソフトウェア（ソフトウェア・サービス）などにも適用されるといわれている。例えばグーグルのAdsenseのようなPPCSEは、極めてマイナーな広告でも同社に収益をもたらしている。
