　In a tiny shop corner crowded with apollo caps, portraits of Bob Marley, accessories and narrow jagged leaves stands a middle-aged man with arms folded across his chest and a pipe sticking out of his mouth.
He is Ko'ichi Maeda, 44, the owner of a new boutique in Osaka's trendy America-mura district. Merchandise pictured at this shop might appear ordinary at a glance, but its not.
Its rare, verging on illegal, reminds Friday.

　野球帽とボブ・マーレーの肖像、アクセサリー、幅の狭いぎざぎざの草でいっぱいの小さな店のすみに立っているのは、腕組みをしながら口にパイプを咥えた中年の男だ。
彼は麻枝(まえだ)光一(44才)で、大阪のトレンディーな区域アメリカ村にある新しいブティックのオーナーだ。
この店にあると描写された商品は、一見普通のものに見えるかもしれないが、そうではない。
めったにない違法すれすれのものだと、フライデーは指摘する。

　According to the magazine, the newly establishment "Taima-do"hemp shop sells imported clothing and accessories made from the grass popularly dried and used as a recreational drug.
Friday says Maeda imports almost all his textile products from the United States as marijuana is not available here under a law that strictly prohibits its use for any purpose.

　フライデーによると、この新しくつくられた「大麻堂」という大麻の店は、娯楽用ドラッグとして乾燥され使われた草[※大麻]から作られた衣類やアクセサリーを一般に売っている。
フライデーは、麻枝が、彼のほとんどすべての織物製品を合衆国から輸入しているという。
大麻は、どんな目的であろうとも使用を厳しく禁じている法律のため、ここでは入手できないからだ。

　Owner Maeda is a die-hard marijuana advocate who has authored a book on his beloved plant.
"I bought a wallet made of marijuana when I traveled to the United States a year and a half ago," recounts Maeda.
"The idea for this shop came from that purchase.
In Japan, marijuana is automatically associated with illegal drug usage.
But that's not correct.
In the U.S. is plenty of merchandise on sale made from marijuana."

　オーナーの麻枝は筋金入りの大麻擁護者で、彼のいとしい植物[※大麻]に関する本を書いほどだ。
「私は、一年半前合衆国に旅行したとき、大麻でつくられた財布を買いました」と麻枝は詳しく話す。
「この購入から、この店のアイデアがうまれました。日本では大麻は、違法ドラッグとしての使用を無意識のうちに連想されます。
しかしこれは間違っています。
合衆国では大麻から作った大量の商品が売られています」

　Friday listens on.

　フライデーはさらに聞く。

　"Thomas Jefferson was growing marijuana at his farm and had a plant which he used to make paper.
He wrote a draft for the Declaration of Independence on paper made 100 percent from marijuana."
The authority adds that marijuana can also be used to produce a gasoline substitute and medicine to cure headaches.

　「トマス・ジェファーソンは彼の農場で大麻を栽培し、ある設備を持っていて、かれはそれを紙を作るために使いました。
彼は、大麻100%で作られた紙に独立宣言の草稿を書きました」
この大麻の専門家は、大麻はガソリンの代替物や頭痛を治す薬を作り出すのに使える、と付け加える。

　The magazine discovers that the boutique is just a part of Maeda's larger plan for rectifying what he regards as popular misconceptions about the "harmless"and"useful" plant.
His next goal is inaugurating the Japan Hemp Party.
He is hoping to run for a House of Councilors seat in the next election and launch a campaign for revision of the Hemp Control Law. (TI)

　フライデーの取材では、このブティックは麻枝のより大きな計画の一部にすぎない。
その計画は、この「安全」で「役に立つ」植物[※大麻]についての、よくある誤解だと彼がみなしているものを、正しいものに訂正することである。
彼の次の目標は日本大麻党をつくることだ。
