Lesbian bars spread the carpet for curious men
Shukan Hoseki 9/28 By RYANN CONNELL
Lesbians hold a certain erotic allure for many men.
And it's precisely for that reason sapphic sisters have a tendency to set up an impenetrable dike around their world to keep lechers away.
Yet, Shukan Hoseki notes, a growing number of lesbian bars in the gay quarter of Tokyo's Shinjuku-ku have recently started to move away from the concept of "wimmin only." and are even prepared to open their doors to male customers.
"Lately, women and men have become more androgynous, right? So bars have removed the barriers that used to be set up to separate women and men, and some lesbian bars will let guys in," says Emi Kato, a Marunouchi office worker by day and frequenter of sapphic swill-houses at nights.
"Shinjuku alone has over a dozen lesbian bars and of them, there are only four that absolutely refuse to let guys in."
あるバーの経営者は、自分は男性客のことを気にしていない、と週刊宝石に語る。
"We're lesbian joint, but we get a lot of men coming in here," the operator says.
"There used to be a lot that we were worried about, so we banned guys from entering, but now things are all right. It seems once a guy has come here a few times, he gets addicted to the place."
Perhaps the softening attitude toward men stems from a change in dyke demographies.
Annies, a lesbian magazine that's currently in hiatus, wanted to get its finger on the pulse of the world of Lesbos, so asked 150 of its readers to tell what they fantasized about when they had their fingers on something else.
Although the 85 who said that when masturbating they conjure up images of women making love constituted a clear majority of the rug-munching respondents, 18 claimed to dream of two guys getting down to it, while another 47 reckoned they visualized heterosexual fantasies.
"Lots of the younger girls nowadays are bisexually inclined, you know," a lesbian bar boss says.
And it seems the increasing tendency for women to swing both ways in the sack has reached out to encompass males in a world where militant feminist dictated ideals of sapphic success had once been measured almost exclusively in terms of finding those with digits of dexterity, or cunning linguists.
Despite the willingness of some lesbians to accept men into their once-exclusive world, though, other dykes say that when it comes to some types of guys they're still wary of wantonness.
"Lesbian bars are pretty good places. But up until a while ago, they used to attract guys dressed up as women," a butch barfly tells Shukan Hoseki.
"Girls at the bars would treat these guys like real women. But then, one night, a transsexual ended up raping a girl he'd picked up at a lesbian bar. Ever since then, whenever a guy made up like a women walks into one of our places, you can sense that everyone feels a bit nervous."
