It's January 18, 1970 and it's race #1 of the season for NASCAR's Grand National Division [forerunner of Winston Cup]. The Motor Trend 500 is being run on the road course at Riverside International Raceway at Riverside, California.
Buddy Young, of Fairfax, Virginia was making his first start for the L.G. DeWitt team. On lap 38, Dick Brooks blew an engine and dumped a lot of oil on the track. Young couldn't avoid it and wound up tumbling down the track, side-over-side at least a dozen times.
Young, a 27-year-old sophomore driver, suffered a concussion and internal injuries in the mishap.
