Building Radical Community-Based Mental Health Support Systems in a World Gone Mad
possible facilitators: Ashley McNamara and Sarah Stalker of The Icarus Project
possible descriptions
As individuals and communities, how can we help those of us struggling with mental health issues feel less alienated? How can we respond compassionately to crisis and encourage health? How can we talk about altered states of consciousness and what it means to be "crazy?" How can we encourage self-care, self-determination, and personal growth? How can we create safe space for dialogue and build networks of support in our communities? What tools and treatments are available to us as we learn to be healthier? Come join an open discussion of these questions and learn more about The Icarus Project, a grassroots network of people struggling with the dangerous gifts commonly labeled as "mental illnesses." Let's share skills and strategies for creating mental health support structures and a culture of radical wellness in our communities. You can find out more about The Icarus Project at

healing cultures: strategies and ideas
possible facilitators: debi
possible descriptions
we all need a bit of healing, rite? this workshop/ discussion would create an informal space where people could share ideas of useful healing strategies from the pratical to the spiritual. given that alternative therapies are usually only available to those who can afford them, sharing knowledge, ideas and strategies in this area & making them truly accessible within communities is a necessary step along the road to removing hetero patriarchal, capitalist culture's stranglehold on healing and health.

Hi, I would very much like to be part of this event. I have led a number of workshops at previous feminist events, mostly ladyfests. These have been on self harm, sexual abuse and mental health. Mental health was my most recent one, at Ladyfest Brighton, and it was well received. I was only able to pick one workshop from this list, but I would also be interested in the topics of Trauma support & the Icarus project, Mental Health & Nutrition (trained as a nutritionist once, however this was a while ago and Im not 100% confident) & Child Abuse. In terms of my ideas for these workshops I simply feel that it is really important to build feminist-based support systems outside of the NHS, as the NHS is currently failing a lot of people. These workshops could be a valuable move towards that. But I can put together something more concise than that given time, thats just where Im coming from. Please contact me with any further info. Thanks, Emma
i have several ideas of discussions i could facilitate and am in contact with 2 other people who are doing workshops in this area - some of them we can work together on. if anyone else volunteers it'd b good to compare ideas. i'll send a description when i've worked one out. please note i'd much rather not have my name included on the website.

1. Natural Health: Our bodies will always strive to come back to wellness if we provide the right environment. What are we doing that facilitates this? What do we do that inhibits this? Optimal health is about the balance between the stresses of life and the nutrients we ingest to nourish and protect ourselves mentally and physically. This workshop is about how to become and remain fit and healthy and happy until a ripe old age and will cover breast and reproductive health including the menopause and the politics of cancer; compulsive eating issues and the slimming industry. 2. Loving our Beautiful Bodies: Quantum physics recognises the power of our thoughts to effect changes in ourselves and the world. This will be a practical workshop using image making and body paint to effect a change in how we relate to our exquisite womanly bodies.

It would be interesting to share some of this information as part of a workshop relating to menstrauation I would also like to conduct further research as to how these two syndromes impact upon other women and so would be looking for others who may be prepared to share some of there experiences and maybe keep a record of there symptoms and any changes in there severity as the seasons change. Thanx Lou
