1. 伝承は物理実体を必要としない。レプラコーンやネス湖の怪獣や精霊や歯の妖精などは伝承の中で生き続けているが、実際に見つかって調べられたことはない。
2. 人間は恐竜と会ったことはない
3. 神話や伝承のインスパイヤに、恐竜が生きている必要はない。中国では化石の骨（恐竜に限らず、あらゆる種類の生物の骨）がドラゴンの骨と呼ばれる。プロトケラトプスの化石はグリフィンの伝説をインスパイヤした[Mayor 2000]。ラコタ神話では、サウスダコタ州のBadlandsの恐竜の化石を河の怪獣のものだとしていた[Erdoes and Ortiz 1984, 220-222]。ポーニー族は化石をかつて存在した巨人族のものだとしていた[Grinnell 1961, 355-356]。
