The observed rate of cosmic dust influx should have produced a layer 182 feet thick over the entire surface of the earth if the earth were 5 billion years old. The distinctive nickel and iron content of the dust should make it easy to detect.
観測されている宇宙塵の流入率からすると、地球が50億歳だとするなら、地表は厚さ182フィートの宇宙塵で覆われているはずである。宇宙塵に大量に含まれるニッケルと鉄は容易に検出されているはずである。

Morrisが計算に用いた観測された率は、大気圏内で収集されたダストに基づくものである。この測定には地上からのダストが混入している。より最近の人工衛星による宇宙塵の測定では、Morrisoの率の1%程度の大きさであり、45億年でも厚み66cmである[Kyte and Wasson 1986]。Morrisが使った1400万トン/年という数字に対して、さらに最近のグリーランドのアイスコアのイリジウムとプラチナの研究では、14キロトン/年という数字が推定されている[Gabrielli et al. 2004]。
