Fire Festival in Valencia
The fire festival of Valencia starts on March 12 and lasts for a week. Children have no school during that week.
People make a lot of interesting dolls, both large and small, for this festival. When the festival comes, they display these dolls squares all over the city. They also display an especially large doll in front of the City Hall.
We walk around and look at these dolls. Many of them look just like famous people. Many friends and I like the dolls of TV stars and cartoon characters.
The big days for us girls are the 17th and 18th. On these days we put on beautiful dresses. With flowers in our hands, we parade through the city to the big church. At the church, we give the flowers to Our Lady.
On the evening of March 19, people burn all the dolls in each square. When there are no more dolls, people go to the square in front of the City Hall. There we see the big doll.
Around midnight fireworks start and people set fire to the big doll. We shout happily and we sing a song of our homeland. We believe that the fire burns up all the bad things of the cold winter together with the dolls.
The festival is a very happy time for us. When it is over, we know that spring is just around the corner.
