In order to save those trees, he first had to study them. He also had to make medicine for their treatment. Those things take time and money, but Dr. Yamano had very little money. His family understood his wish and they stood behind him when he worked at night and studied during the day.
In those days, damaged trees were treated by filling holes and cracks with concrete. But Dr. Yamano thought, “The trees are living things just like us. They may feel ill if they have concrete in their holes.”
In order to allow them to take in water, air and food, he decide to use earth, not concrete, to fill any cracks. “The trees will feel better,” he thought.
To save sick trees he cut off damaged parts and then cleaned the cut place with a brush. He also gave them special medicine and food. Thought his treatment, many old trees began living again.
Dr. Yamano is now known all over the world as the tree doctor. He always tries to give comfort to a tree. He strokes the tree and says kind things such as “Thank you for living so long,” while he treat it.
