Japan team successfully treats insulin resistance

NHK World -- 18/07/2009

A Japanese university team says it has successfully treated a patient with a type of diabetes by eliminating the Helicobacter pylori bacterium associated with stomach diseases.

The team led by Professor Hideki Katagiri of Tohoku University's medical department says a man in his 80s has completely recovered from Type B insulin resistance.

The condition is caused by an immune disorder that develops antibodies to insulin, which works to lower blood glucose levels.

The team says the patient's insulin resistance disappeared about 4 months after it removed Helicobacter pylori from his stomach.

Elimination of Helicobacter pylori from the stomach lining is known to improve conditions caused by immune disorders.

This is the first known case of a treatment of Type B insulin resistance using the method.

Professor Katagiri says the detailed mechanism is not yet known but he thinks Helicobacter pylori infection may be a cause of Type B insulin resistance.

The team's study has been published in the British medical journal the Lancet.
