永らくブログをサボっていたけれど、日頃お世話になっているチームテイケイの田山選手が、トライアスロンで日本人選手として初のワールドカップ優勝！という速報を友人からメールでもらったことに刺激を受けて、感想を書いてみます。
そもそも、どんなレースでどんな風に優勝したんだろうと興味が湧いてきます。とりあえず、インターネットで関連ニュースをサーチ。･･･日本のサイトの情報はショボイ。見つかったのは、せいぜい時事通信、デイリースポーツくらい。内容も乏しくレースの展開などは全く書かれていない。
そこで仕方なく、英語のサイトも探すと、ITU(International Triathlon Union)のサイトで大会リザルトの速報
が見つかりました。速報とはいえ、日本の味気ない記事より余程詳しく書かれいます。
トライアスロンのワールドカップは、毎年シリーズで世界を転戦して行われ、そのうちの1つ（最終戦）で優勝したということなのだけれど、たとえ１戦でも世界のトップに立ったというのはすごいことです。例えば、F1でも世界を転戦するけれど、その中の１つでも日本人が優勝すれば、きっと大騒ぎでしょう。
それにしても、日本のメディアの扱いは小さいなあ。亀田兄弟のどうでもいい記事は力入れているのに。
英語の勉強がてら、読んでみた。
Historic day for Japan in Eilat (December 1, 2007 )
「日本にとって歴史的な日」うーん、タイトルからして扱いの大きさが違うなあ。

History was made in the men’s field as Hirokatsu Tayama
became the first Japanese athlete to ever win an ITU World Cup.
Last year’s Asian Champion broke the tape with a time of 1 hour,
49 minutes and 47 seconds. His previous best in a World Cup result was a
7th place finish in his native Japan at the 2006 event in Ishigaki.
Ukrainian Volodymyr Polikarpenko was 46 seconds behind Tayama for
the silver, taking his 22nd career World Cup medal while Russian
phenom Alexander Brukhankov came across the line for the bronze,
putting an exclamation mark on his own breakthrough year.

最初は、多分ちょっと持って回った言い回し。
ここで men's field は、男子の競技(field には、競技や競技者という意味も
あるらしい)
直訳すると、田山選手が日本人アスリートとして初めてワールドカップを
優勝することで、歴史が作られた。
ってなるだけど、ちょっと雰囲気が伝わらないなあ。
歴史的快挙達成。
田山選手が日本人アスリートとして初めてITUワールドカップ男子を優勝！
という感じだろうか？
後は、淡々と事実が述べられている。
去年のアジアチャンピオンが1:49'47"のタイムでゴールテープを切った。
今までのベストは、2006年の地元日本の石垣島での7位だった。
46秒遅れで、ウクライナの Volodymyr Polikarpenko が銀メダル。
そして銅メダルは、ロシアの怪物 Alexander Brukhankov が 22個目の
W杯メダルとして獲得した。
(phenom は phenomenon の略形で、「現象」という意味の他に、並外れた能力
を持った人という意味もある)

Off the bike, Tayama bolted out of the second transition and left the rest of the field behind. The gamble paid off as no other man would catch him for the remainder of the race. Tayama was runner-up at this year’s Asian Championships, finished 13th at the Athens Olympics and 5th at last year’s Asian Games in Doha. Japan has hosted 28 World Cups in ITU history, more than any other country but had never seen a gold medalist
until Tayama’s victory today. At the finish line he celebrated with a dance and later a tearful phone call back home. Dmitry Polyansky of Russia and Duarte Silva Marques of Portugal both finished inside the top five, the best of each of their careers.

最も知りたかったレース展開だけれども、そんなに詳細ではないけれど、レースの山場が躍動感のある文章で書かれている（気がする）。Nativeでない僕にとっては、bolt out とかthe gamble pay off というところが全く意味が分からないので、辞書を引き引き読むことになった。
bolt off は何かから逃げるように走る（ダッシュする？）こと。田山選手はバイクを降りると、第二トランジッションから飛び出し、残りの競技者を置き去りにした。このギャンブルが功を奏し、残りのレースで他の選手が彼を捕まえられなかったことができなかった。うーん、何か雰囲気あるなあ。
そして、田山選手のここ２,３年の経歴が紹介されて、日本が２８回目のワールドカップの挑戦して、初めての金メダルが田山選手によってもたらされたことがあらためて紹介される。
ゴール直後、彼はダンスで自らを祝福し、その後、家族に涙ながらの報告をしたのだそうだ。

With the win, Tayama rockets up the world rankings and finishes the year at
number 26 from 57. Polikarpenko moves up one spot to number six which drops
Brukhankov down to seven. But no one was going to catch world number one
Javier Gomez in the rankings. With four World Cup titles in 2007,
the Spaniard secured his second straight World Cup series title.

ここでは、今年のワールドランキングの変動について述べられています。
rocket up という表現が面白い。へええー、こんな風に言うんだ。
