かつての日本には（と言うか、封建国家は大抵の場合そうだが）現代的な意味での常備軍が存在せず、「いざ鎌倉」の際に、各地の有力者が自分の兵隊を連れて駆けつけるという軍制をとっていた。
この制度を現在も名目上ではあるが続けている国家がある。なんと、イギリスである。
陸軍の各部隊にはいまも所有者がおり、これをColonel-in-Chief（Royal Regiment of Artilleryに関してはCaptain-General）という。国王以外にも所有者がいるのだから国王が所有する物を表す"Royal"が付けられるはずもなく、そのためイギリス陸軍の正式名は今もBritish Armyである。なんか、曲がりなりにも連合王国の一員である北アイルランドの立場がない名称だが、いいのだろうか？
