U.S. President Barack Obama's step-grandmother has had solar panels installed on top of her house in Kenya. Sarah Obama lives in Kogelo village in western Kenya. She had the panels fitted by an international environmental group.
The group came up with the idea as a way of making the case for renewable energy to President Obama and other world leaders, ahead of the UN climate change conference, COP15, in December.
Watching the lights come on in her home, Ms. Obama said she would no longer have to buy kerosene to light her house.
The main source of energy in Kenya is hydroelectric power.
But an ongoing drought has led to frequent power cuts, and the Kenyan government is considering eco-friendly alternatives.

ケニアに住む、アメリカ・オバマ大統領の義理の祖母の家に太陽光発電パネルが設置されました。オバマ大統領の祖母、サラ・オバマさんはケニア西部のコゲロ村に住んでいます。
この太陽光発電パネルは、国際環境保護団体が設置しました。
この団体は、１２月に気候変動について話し合う国連の会議COP15が開かれるのを前に、オバマ大統領をはじめ各国の首脳に、再生可能なエネルギーの重要性を訴えようと、今回の企画を思いつきました。
家の明かりがつくのを見て、サラさんは「これで火をともすための灯油を買わなくてもよくなった」と喜んでいました。
ケニアでは水力発電が主ですが、現在も続く干ばつによって頻繁に電力供給を減らさざるを得ない状況で、ケニア政府は環境にやさしい代替エネルギーを検討しています。
