Japan and Peru have agreed to a study on how terrestrial digital broadcasting, using a Japanese format, may be introduced to Peru.
Japan's communications minister, Tsutomu Sato, and his Peruvian counterpart, Enrique Cornejo, visited a factory that makes digital tuners in Utsunomiya City, north of Tokyo, Friday.
During the bilateral talks, Japan agreed to send engineers to Peru. The two countries will also set up a joint working committee next month that will include firms from the private sector. The ministers signed a document to confirm the broad cooperation.
Back in April, Peru decided to adopt the Japanese standard over the U.S. and European equivalents. This was due to better mobile reception, and availability of one-segment broadcasting.
Peru is the second country after Brazil to adopt the Japanese format. Peru hopes to begin digital broadcasts next March.

日本とペルーは、ペルーでの地上デジタル放送に「日本方式」を導入する件について、協力のあり方を検討していくことで合意しました。
日本の佐藤勉総務大臣とペルーのエンリケ・コルネホ運輸通信大臣は金曜日、地上デジタル放送の受信機を作っている電機メーカーの宇都宮市の工場を視察しました。
両者は会談で、日本がペルーに技術者を派遣することや、民間企業を含む共同作業部会を来月に設置させるなど、広範な協力を検討することを確認し、文書に署名しました。
ペルーはこの４月、「日本」、「アメリカ」、「ヨーロッパ」の３つの方式のうち、移動中でも電波の受信が良好で、「ワンセグ」サービスが利用可能な「日本方式」の採用を決定しました。
ペルーはブラジルに次いで、海外で２番目に「日本方式」の採用を決定し、来年３月にはデジタル放送を開始したいとしています。
