Sunday's general election resulted in a power shift in Japan.
The main opposition Democratic Party has scored a historic victory. It brings an end to more than 50 years of almost unbroken rule by the governing Liberal Democratic Party.
The Democrats secured 308 seats in the 480-member Lower House. That is more than double the number of seats they had heading into the election.
It ensures the party will take over the reins of power from the governing coalition.
The Liberal Democratic Party, on the other hand, got only 119 seats. It lost more than half of the seats it held before the election.
The opposition alliance, the main opposition Democratic Party together with the Social Democratic Party and the People's New Party won 318 seats in total.
The LDP President Taro Aso said on Sunday night that he will step down as the party president to take responsibility for his party's defeat.
The leader of the Democratic Party, Yukio Hatoyama, is set to succeed Taro Aso as Prime Minister.
Hatoyama said in an interview with NHK that his party will carry out policies, respecting people's opinions.
When it comes to their policies; the Democrats say the United States is Japan's most important partner. But that they want to keep a little more distance from the U.S.
On the economy, they aim to put priority on turning the export-oriented economy into one led by domestic demand by stimulating household consumption.

日曜日に行われた衆議院選挙の結果、日本の政権が交代することになりました。
野党第一党の民主党が歴史的勝利を収め、自民党はこの５０年以上のほとんどに渡って守ってきた政権の座を失いました。
民主党は定員４８０の衆議院で、３０８議席を獲得しました。これは衆議院選挙前に民主党が占めていた議席数の倍以上です。
そのため、民主党が（現在の自民党と公明党の）連立与党から政権を奪取することになります。
一方、自民党は１１９議席しか獲得できず、選挙前の議席の半数以下となって、野党第一党の民主党が社民党や国民新党と合わせて、合計３１８議席を獲得しました。
麻生太郎自民党総裁は、大敗の責任を取って総裁を辞任する考えを、日曜日夜に表明しました。
民主党の鳩山由紀夫代表が、麻生氏の後を受けて、総理大臣を引き継ぐことになります。
鳩山代表はＮＨＫとのインタビューのなかで、民主党は国民の意見を尊重し、政策を実行すると述べています。
政策に関して民主党は、アメリカが日本の最も重要なパートナーであるとした一方で、やや距離を置きたいという姿勢も見せています。
経済に関しては、家計消費を刺激することで、輸出主導型から内需主導型への転換を優先する意向です。
