Japanese scientists say a species of butterfly originating in Southeast Asia, has been found breeding in Tokyo for the first time.
They say global warming may be responsible for its northward spread from its usual tropical habitat.
The tiny gossamer-winged butterfly has a wingspan of three centimeters. It has a unique characteristic. Its larvae feed only on shoots of the subtropical cycad plant.
The butterfly usually lives in tropical Southeast Asia but has been spreading northward.
Last month, an amateur researcher discovered an adult butterfly and carried out a survey with researchers from the University of Tokyo.
They identified eggs and larvae of the species in four locations of Tokyo.
It takes less than two weeks for the insect to grow from an egg to an adult. It's likely to rapidly spread in Japan, perhaps damaging cycads planted in home gardens.

日本の科学者によると、東南アジアを原産とするチョウの一種が東京都内で繁殖しているのが初めて見つかり、地球温暖化の影響で、生息地が本来の熱帯から北へ広がってきている可能性があると指摘しています。
薄い羽を持つこの小さなチョウは、羽を広げると３センチほどで、幼虫の時には、亜熱帯のソテツの新芽だけを食べるという珍しい特徴を持っています。
このチョウは本来、東南アジアの熱帯地域に生息しますが、北に分布が広がっており、先月（８月）、成虫を発見したチョウの愛好家が、東京大学の研究者と調査した結果、東京の４か所で、同じ種類の卵と幼虫が見つかりました。
このチョウは２週間以内で卵から成虫になるため、今後急速に広がり、家庭の庭に植えられているソテツに被害を与えるおそれもあります。
