The opening ceremony for the 21st Deaflympics was held in Taipei on Saturday. The event takes place every four years for athletes with hearing disabilities.
11 days of competition will include 19 events such as swimming and Judo.
A record number of about 4,300 athletes from 91 countries and territories will take part.
During the opening ceremony, more than 10,000 spectators enjoyed drum music by students with hearing disabilities and dance performances by ethnic minority groups in Taiwan.
Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou used sign language to declare the Deaflympics officially open.
The Chinese team stayed away from the ceremony to protest the recent visit by Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who visited Taiwan to pray for the victims of last month's typhoon.

４年に一度開催される聴覚障害者たちのスポーツ大会、第２１回デフリンピックの開会式が、土曜日（９月５日）に台北で開幕しました。
１１日間にわたる大会には、水泳や柔道など１９の競技に、これまでで最も多い９１の国と地域から、およそ４,３００人が参加します。
開会式では、１万人余りの観客が、耳の不自由な学生たちによる太鼓の演奏や台湾に住む少数民族の踊りを楽しみ、台湾の馬英九総統が手話で、デフリンピックの開会を宣言しました。
（一方、）中国の選手団は、チベット仏教の最高指導者ダライ・ラマ１４世が、先の台風による犠牲者を追悼するため（台湾を）訪れたことに抗議して、開会式を欠席しました。
