U.S. President Barack Obama is facing strong opposition from Republicans to his health care reform plan. But the president has again shown his firm resolve to transform the country's system.

"The plan I'm proposing will cost around 900 billion dollars over 10 years, less than we have spent on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The time for bickering is over. The time for games has passed. Now is the season for action."
Obama delivered a speech to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday.
He countered Republican criticism that his reform plan would lead to more government spending.
The president said that more than 30-million Americans remain uninsured and that the current health care system has led to soaring medical costs.
President Obama has made health care reform a key agenda for his administration.
But the Republicans' fierce attacks have led to a lower approval rate for the president.
Public support for Obama is now down to just over 50 percent, compared with the 68 percent at his inauguration.

医療保険制度の改革をめぐって、共和党からの強い反対に直面しているアメリカのオバマ大統領が、改革を断行する強い意志を改めて示しました。

「私の改革案では、１０年間でおよそ９,０００億ドルを必要としますが、これはイラクやアフガニスタンで使った戦費よりも少ないのです。言い争いの時期はもう終わりました。駆け引きの時期も過ぎました。今こそ、行動する時なのです」
オバマ大統領は、水曜日、議会上下両院の合同会議で演説を行い、大統領の改革案では政府の歳出が増大すると反対する野党・共和党に対し、反論しました。
オバマ大統領は、３,０００万人以上のアメリカ人が医療保険に加わることができていないうえ、今の医療保険制度が医療費の高騰をもたらしていると述べました。
オバマ大統領は医療保険制度の改革を政権の重要課題にしていますが、大統領の支持率は野党・共和党の激しい攻撃（批判キャンペーンなど）により就任時の６８パーセントから、５０パーセント前半に低下しています。
