One of London's busiest intersections is scheduled for a Japanese makeover. It'll be modeled after the so-called pedestrian "scramble" in Tokyo's Shibuya district.
A major London shopping district, the Oxford Circus area, is visited by about 200 million people a year. London authorities are renovating the vicinity to prepare for the 2012 Olympic Games.
The authorities say that to ease chronic congestion, the new Oxford intersection will be redesigned after the Shibuya station crossing, one of the busiest in the world.
In the new layout for Oxford Circus, signals will be timed to stop all traffic and allow pedestrians to cross the street in any direction at one time.
The city authorities say Shibuya's image as a fashion center fits perfectly with the new development in London.
Pedestrians will be able to "scramble" across Oxford Circus by this fall.

ロンドンでもっとも混雑の激しい交差点のひとつが、東京・渋谷にある、いわゆる「スクランブル交差点」をモデルにして、日本風に大改造されることになりました。
ロンドンの主要ショッピング街「オックスフォード・サーカス」は年間およそ２億人が訪れるエリアで、ロンドン市は、２０１２年のオリンピックに向けてこの付近の再開発を計画しています。
市当局によると、慢性的な混雑を緩和するため、このオックスフォード交差点が、世界でもっとも混雑の激しい交差点の一つである渋谷駅前を手本に、新しく生まれ変わるということです。
新しい設計では、交差点のすべての車両の通行をいったん止めて、歩行者がどの方向へも渡れるようになります。
ロンドン市は、ファッションの街・渋谷のイメージは、ロンドンの新開発にピッタリだと話しています。
今週秋には、歩行者がオックスフォード・サーカスを「スクランブル」できるようになる予定です。
