In New York, jobless people had a chance to forget their woes for a while by taking part in games like throwing office equipment across the pavement.
"Get set! You're fired!"
More than 40 participants had to show proof that they were unemployed to sign up.
A 26-year-old, out-of-work computer programmer hosted the 'Unemployment Olympics' at a park in Manhattan on Tuesday.
One game had contestants hurling a black office phone at targets on the pavement. Another event was the Pin the Blame on the Boss. Participants pulled a hat over their eyes and tried to place a pin where 'the Boss' was written on a panel.
"People coming together all trying to have fun to get off the negative stuff, focusing on the positive. It's good. This is the kind of event that people should be having more. It's (a) community based solution to this problem rather than (an) individualistic (one)."
The employment situation is severe in New York. The February jobless rate exceeded 8 percent.

ニューヨークでは、失業中の人たちがオフィス機器を地面に投げつけるといったゲームに参加し、憂さ晴らしをしました。
「用意！ クビだ！」
集まった４０人あまりの参加者は、失業中であることを証明する書類を見せて、参加申し込みをしました。
火曜日、２６歳の失業中のコンピュータープログラマーが「失業者オリンピック」をマンハッタンにある公園で主催しました。
地面の上に書かれた的をめがけて、黒いオフィス用電話を投げつけるゲームや、「上司のせいにする」というゲームでは、帽子を深くかぶり目隠しをした参加者が、パネルの上に書かれた「上司（the Boss）」の文字をめがけ、ピンをさしていました。
「みんな、一緒に楽しむことで、後ろ向きな気持ちを忘れて、前向きになろうとしているんです。いいことだと思います。このようなイベントがもっと開催されればいいですね。一人きりではなくみんなで解決しようというものです。」
ニューヨークの雇用情勢は深刻で、２月の失業率は８パーセントを超えました。
