In the U.S. capital of Washington, D.C., at least six people were killed and more than 60 injured when two commuter trains collided during the evening rush hour on Monday.
The two trains collided in Takoma Park in the north of the D.C. area at around 5 PM.
One of the trains ended up on top of the other. The train operator says one of the train drivers is among the dead and two of the 60-odd injured are in serious condition.
The cause of the accident is not yet known. But it is believed that a six-car train derailed first and another one crashed into it from behind.
The collision occurred above ground on one of Washington's main subway lines linking the city center and the suburbs. The trains were bound for the downtown area.
Many passengers walked along the tracks to escape from the accident site.
Fire trucks and ambulances have been mobilized at the site, while rescuers have cut into train cars to free the remaining passengers.

アメリカの首都ワシントンで、月曜日の帰宅時のラッシュアワーに通勤列車が追突し、少なくとも６人が死亡、６０人以上が負傷しました。
午後５時ごろワシントン地区北部のタコマ・パークで２台の列車が衝突し、後続の列車が前の列車の上に乗り上げました。鉄道会社によると、運転士の１人が死亡、６０人以上がけがをし、このうち２人が重体だということです。
事故の原因はまだつかめていませんが、６両編成の列車が脱線し、そこに後続の列車が追突したものともみられています。
事故が起きたのは、市中心部と郊外を結ぶワシントンの主要地下鉄線のひとつで、その地上部分で起きました。２台の列車はともに首都ワシントンの中心部に向かっていました。
多くの乗客は線路沿いを歩いて事後現場から避難しました。
消防車と救急車が現場に出動し、救急隊員らが車両を切断して車内に取り残された乗客を救出しました。
