The United Nations estimates the number of hungry people in the world has reached a record high of over one billion people this year.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization projected on Thursday that 100 million more people than last year have been pushed into chronic hunger.
That's a projected increase of about 11 percent, meaning the silent hunger crisis is affecting about one-sixth of the world's population.
The UN blamed the rise on lower incomes and increased unemployment, due to the global economic crisis.
A drop in foreign direct investment and the funds sent home by those working abroad will further limit the ability of developing countries to sustain agricultural production.
FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf said the silent hunger crisis poses a serious risk to world peace and security, and the world needs to take the actions necessary to eradicate hunger.

国連は、今年、飢えに苦しむ人の数が世界全体で１０億人を超え、過去最悪となる見通しを示しました。
木曜日、ＦＡＯ・国連食糧農業機関は、慢性的な飢えに苦しむ人が、去年よりおよそ１億人増えるとの見通しを発表しました。これは、約１１パーセントの増加となり、世界のおよそ６人に１人に「静かな食糧危機」がおよぶということになります。
国連は、飢えに苦しむ人が増えたのは、世界的な経済危機の影響で、所得が減少し失業率が高くなっているためであるとし、途上国への海外直接投資や外国で働く労働者からの本国への送金が減ると、途上国の農業生産力の維持がさらに難しくなるだろうと指摘しています。
ＦＡＯのディウフ事務局長は、「食糧をめぐる危機は、世界の平和と安定への深刻なリスクをもたらすだけに、国際社会は飢餓をなくすための必要な行動を取らなければならない」と述べました。
