Shinsei plans 2010 merger with Aozora
Shinsei Bank and Aozora Bank have entered the final stage of negotiations over the merger of the two banks, with a view to completing the tie-up in autumn 2010, it was learned Thursday.
The two banks are expected to reach a basic agreement on the merger as soon as early next month, and announce the deal officially to the public.
Shinsei and Aozora initially had been discussing a two-stage merger, first by establishing a joint holding company in summer 2010 and completing the deal the following year.
However, due to the current harsh business conditions, the two banks concluded it would be best to complete the merger earlier, and they decided to accelerate their efforts through a single-stage process rather than two stages.
As of March 31, the consolidated assets of Shinsei and Aozora were 11.95 trillion yen and 6.08 trillion yen, respectively. After a merger, the new bank's consolidated assets would exceed the 15.09 trillion yen of Chuo Mitsui Trust Holdings Inc., and would make it the nation's sixth-largest banking institution.

「新生銀行」と「あおぞら銀行」が合併交渉の最終段階に入り、２０１０年秋の合併完了を視野に入れていることが木曜日に分かった。
来月初めにも基本合意に達し、正式に発表する見込みだ。
「新生銀行」と「あおぞら銀行」は当初は、まず２０１０年夏に共同持株会社を設立し翌年に合併を完了させる２段階合併を協議していた。
しかし現在の厳しいビジネス環境の中では、合併を早く完了することが望ましいとの結論に達し、２段階ではなく１段階で合併することを決定した。
３月２１日時点で、「新生銀行」と「あおぞら銀行」の連結総資産はそれぞれ１１兆９,５００億円と６兆８００億円だった。
合併後、新銀行の連結総資産は中央三井トラスト・ホールディングスの１５兆９００億円を抜き、国内第６位の銀行となる。
