Coworker held in sludge tank death
A 40-year-old man was arrested Friday on suspicion of killing a woman who worked under him by dumping her in an outdoor sludge tank in Shiga Prefecture last week, police said.
The man from Maibara, Shiga Prefecture, allegedly hit the 28-year-old office worker from nearby Nagahama on the head with an object before throwing her into the tank sometime between June 10 and 12, they said.
The suspect denied the allegation. "I did not either kill or hit her," the police quoted him as saying.
The victim worked under him at a glass-making factory in Takatsuki, Shiga Prefecture. Investigative sources believe that the suspect, who is married, was having an affair with her that later went sour.
The police believe the woman died of suffocation after being thrown into the tank.

部下の女性を先週殺害し、滋賀県の屋外汚泥タンクの中に捨てた容疑で、４０歳の男が金曜日に逮捕された。
警察によれば、滋賀県米原市のこの男は、６月１０日から１２日の間に近くの長浜市に住む２８歳の会社員の頭を凶器で殴った後、タンクの中へ捨てたという。
この男は警察の調べに対し、
「私は彼女を殺していないし、殴ってもいない｣、と容疑を否認している。
被害者は滋賀県高月町のガラス製造工場で、彼の下で働いていた。
捜査関係者は、容疑者（既婚）は彼女と交際していたが後に不仲になったとみている。
警察は、女性はタンクの中へ投げ込まれた後に窒息死したとみている。
