A human rights activist says more than 1,000 people have been killed in the crackdown.
Rebiya Kadeer, head of the World Uygur Congress, spoke to reporters in Washington on Friday.
Rebiya Kadeer said the crackdown is continuing in the regional capital of Urumqi, the western city of Kashgar and elsewhere, though this information has not been confirmed.
She says that more than 1,000 people have died, and that some sources put the number of dead at 3,000.
That is far greater than the death toll of 184 announced by the Chinese government.
Rebiya Kadeer harshly denounced the government, saying men are being rounded up for no reason, and that 5,000 people have been arrested.
The Chinese government has accused her and her organization of stirring up what it calls a violent crime from abroad in order to split the autonomous region.

ある人権活動家は中国当局による弾圧で、１,０００人以上が死亡したとの見方を示しました。
これは（在外ウイグル人組織の）「世界ウイグル会議」のラビア・カーディル代表がワシントンで金曜日に記者会見を行い、明らかにしたものです。
ラビア代表は、現地からの未確認の情報だとした上で、中心都市ウルムチのほかカシュガルなど各地で、弾圧が引き続き行われていると述べました。
さらに、犠牲者は１,０００人を超え、一部には３,０００人が死亡したという情報もあると指摘しています。
この数字は、中国側が発表している死者の数１８４人をはるかに上回るものです。
また、ラビア代表は、（今回の事件で）人々は理由なく次々と（当局に）拘束されており、逮捕者は５,０００人に上るとして、中国政府を厳しく非難しました。
一方、中国政府は今回の暴動について、「（新疆ウイグル）自治区の分裂を目指す海外からの暴力犯罪行為」としてラビア代表らを非難しています。
