A maritime watchdog says pirate attacks off the east coast of Somalia have risen six-fold in a year. The attacks have struck fear into ship crews in the region.
The International Maritime Bureau said on Wednesday that 240 pirate raids were reported around the world from January through June. Over half... that's 144... took place in waters off Somalia alone, where 178 crew members from attacked vessels remained captive.
The watchdog says (that) behind the rise in attacks is a shifting of pirate operations to new areas to avoid surveillance ships. The new targets include the southern Red Sea and waters off Oman.
Beefed-up patrols by foreign navies are hampering the pirates' ability to operate off Somalia.
The watchdog is calling on countries to stay alert, but says there may be fewer attacks through September because of poor weather during the monsoon season.

国際海事局は、ソマリアの東岸沖で起きた海賊による襲撃事件が去年の６倍に増加したと公表しました。こうした事件は、周辺海域の船舶の乗組員たちにとって大きな脅威になっています。
ＩＭＢ・国際海事局は、今年１月から６月末までの半年に世界で起きた海賊事件は２４０件に達したと水曜日に発表しました。
このうちソマリア沖の海域だけで、（海賊事件の）半数以上にのぼる１４４件が発生し、襲撃された船舶の乗組員１７８人が依然として人質にとられたままになっています。
海賊事件が増えた背景について、国際海事局は、（警戒にあたっている）監視船を避けて、紅海の南の海域やオマーン沖の海域を含む新しい地域に行動範囲を移していることがあるとみています。
各国の海軍によって強化された監視活動によって、ソマリア沖では海賊活動ができにくくなっています。
国際海事局では、各国に警戒を続けるように呼びかけていますが、これから９月にかけてはモンスーンによる悪天候で海賊による襲撃は減少するだろうとも述べています。
