Japan's Emperor and Empress visited the Parliament building in Victoria, in the Canadian province of British Columbia, on Saturday. The Imperial Couple is visiting Canada to mark the 80th anniversary of bilateral ties.
The Emperor expressed joy in visiting Victoria, and called it a special city, when he met British Columbian Premier Gordon Campbell.
The Emperor made his first visit to Victoria 56 years ago as the Crown Prince, and spent his first night outside Japan in the west coast city.
The Imperial Couple later met with about 2,500 people who had gathered in front of the Parliament building.
They exchanged words with local residents and received a bouquet of flowers from children.

日本とカナダの外交関係樹立８０周年を記念して、カナダを訪問中の天皇皇后両陛下は、土曜日にカナダのブリティッシュ・コロンビア州ビクトリアにある州議会の議事堂を訪問されました。
ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州のキャンベル首相と面会した天皇陛下は、ビクトリアは「自分にとって特別な都市です」と、訪問を喜ばれました。
天皇陛下は皇太子時代の５６年前にビクトリアを訪れていますが、その時が最初の海外訪問で、初めて日本を離れて宿泊されたのがこの西海岸の町でした。
このあと、両陛下は議事堂前に集まったおよそ２,５００人の人々の歓迎を受け、現地の人たちと言葉を交わし、子どもたちから花束を受け取られました。
