The U.S. Treasury Secretary has stressed that the U.S. government will maintain a policy of keeping the dollar strong against other currencies.
Timothy Geithner made the comment in a speech at the Chamber of Commerce in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday.

"The policies of the United States are designed to lay the conditions for a strong dollar, for more stability in the international monetary system and among the major economies."
Geithner added that the U.S. housing sector and the financial system are showing substantial improvements more quickly than the government had expected.
Geithner apparently tried to reassure Saudi Arabia that the U.S. currency is safe. The U.S. economy remains sluggish and the budget deficit continues to grow due to massive stimulus packages and bailouts. The oil-rich Gulf nation holds huge dollar assets.
The U.S. dollar has been declining against other major currencies recently.
The dollar fell below 92 yen last week, but rebounded to the mid-93-yen level in New York on Tuesday.

アメリカの財務長官は、サウジアラビアのジッダにある商工会議所で講演し、アメリカ政府が他の通貨に対して強いドルを支える政策を継続していくことを強調しました。

その上でガイトナー財務長官は、アメリカの住宅市場と金融システムは、政府の予想よりも早く改善が進んでいる、と述べました。
ガイトナー長官の今回の発言は、多額のドル資産を持つサウジアラビアに対して、アメリカの通貨（ドル）の安全性をアピールするねらいがあるものと見られますが、アメリカ経済は低迷を続け、巨額の景気刺激策や企業の救済策によって財政赤字は拡大しています。
（外国為替市場で）ドルは、他の主要通貨に対してこのところ下落傾向が続いており、先週は１ドル９２円を割りましたが、火曜日にはニューヨーク市場で９３円台半ばにまで戻しています。
