002 US rebuffs N.Korea's hint of bilateral talks

The United States has strongly urged North Korea to return to the 6-party talks. It also urged the North to take concrete actions to discard its nuclear ambition, if it wants to hold direct talks with the US.

US State Department spokesman Ian Kelly was responding to Monday's comments by a North Korean foreign ministry spokesman. The North Korean official rejected calls to return to the 6-party talks and hinted about direct talks with the United States.

Kelly said the United States would not engage with North Korea unless it takes action towards denuclearization.

He did not rule out the possibility of resuming dialogue, but he reiterated that direct talks would take place only within the 6-nation framework.

Kelly added that there would be no direct talks any time soon, as North Korea has not shown any signs of denuclearizing.
