Fill her up... with rice, please! That's what car owners could be saying from now when they pull up at gas stations in Niigata. Japan's first biofuel made from rice went on sale on Friday at 19 stations in the prefecture.
Gas stations belonging to the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations, or Zen-no, are selling the fuel containing three percent bioethanol.
A ceremony was held at one of the stations, with Niigata Governor Hirohiko Izumida attending.
The new fuel is of the same quality and sells for the same price as regular gasoline. As soon as it went on sale, several customers filled up their cars with the biofuel.
Biofuels made from rice, corn and other plants are expected to help curb global warming because they release less greenhouse gases than other types of fuel. Zen-no has been making bioethanol from rice produced for livestock feed to expand the use of rice fields in the Niigata region.

今後、新潟のガソリンスタンドで燃料を入れる時には、そんな会話をしているかもしれません。
稲から作られたバイオ燃料の販売が、新潟県内１９か所のガソリンスタンドで、国内で初めて金曜日に始まりました。
全国農業協同組合連合会（全農）に加盟するガソリンスタンドで、バイオエタノールを３パーセント含む燃料の販売が始まり、そのうちの一つのガソリンスタンドでは泉田裕彦新潟県知事が参列して式典が行われました。新しい燃料は通常のガソリンと品質は同じで、価格もレギュラーガソリンと変わらず、発売開始直後からバイオ燃料を給油する人々の姿が見られました。
稲、とうもろこし、その他の植物から作られるバイオ燃料は、他の燃料に比べて温室効果ガスの排出が少なく、地球温暖化を抑える手助けになると期待されています。
全農では、水田を有効利用しようと、新潟県内でとれた家畜の飼料用などの稲からバイオエタノールを精製しています。
