Japanese researchers have found that the condition of murals at the Bamiyan ruins in Afghanistan is worsening. The ancient murals are designated a World Heritage site.
　Over the past two months, researchers from the Tokyo-based National (Research) Institute for Cultural Properties inspected Buddhist paintings that date back to between the 5th and 9th centuries. It was the first inspection in two years.
The murals are near two giant Buddha statues that were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.
The researchers say paintings they had restored between 2003 and 2007 were in good condition, but others were damaged, with one missing a piece measuring 15-by-15 centimeters.
The experts began the restoration project 6 years ago but suspended their work in 2007 because of security concerns.
It remains unclear when the restoration work will resume.

日本の研究者の調査によって、アフガニスタンのバーミヤン遺跡の壁画の状態が悪化していることがわかりました。この古代の壁画は世界遺産に指定されています。
東京文化財研究所の研究者たちは５世紀から９世紀にかけてつくられた仏教壁画を２ヵ月にわたり調査してきました。これは２年ぶりのことです。
壁画は、２００１年にタリバンによって破壊された２つの大仏像の近くにあります。調査隊によれば、２００３年から２００７年にかけて修復した壁画は良好な状態でしたが、その他の壁画には損傷しているものもあり、なかには１５センチ四方のかけらがなくなっていたものもあるとのことです。
専門家は、６年前から修復作業を進めていましたが、治安の問題のため、２００７年に作業を一時的に中断していました。修復作業がいつ再開されるかまだ見通しが立っていません。
