A UN committee has discussed Japan's efforts to eliminate discrimination against women, with many members pointing out that progress is slow. The Japanese government is aiming to increase the percentage of female managers from 1.7 percent in 2005 to around 5 percent by the end of fiscal 2010.
The committee is discussing the progress of each signatory to the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. 186 countries have signed the pact since it was adopted 30 years ago.
At the meeting on Thursday, Japan's chief delegate, Chieko Nohno, said it's undeniable that progress in gender equality in her country has been slow by international standards. She said the Japanese government has set a goal of increasing the number of women working at higher levels in public service. But other countries were not satisfied with her explanation. They said that the low percentage of female managers may endorse indirect discrimination against women in Japan.

国連の（専門）委員会で、女性差別をなくすための日本の取り組みについて審議が行われ、日本の対応の遅れを指摘する意見が相次ぎました。日本政府は、国家公務員の女性管理職の割合を２００５年の１.７パーセントから２０１０年度末までには５パーセント程度に引き上げることを目標としています。
国連の女性差別撤廃条約は、採択から３０年を迎え、その間に１８６カ国が締結していますが、委員会では各国での取り組みについて審議しています。
木曜日の会合で、日本政府代表団の団長を務める南野千恵子氏は、日本における男女共同参画の進展が国際的基準からすると遅れていることは否めない、と認めた上で、日本政府は国家公務員に女性の管理職を増やす目標を立てていることを説明しました。
しかし各国の委員からは、その内容は十分とはいえず、管理的な立場の職責にある女性の割合が低いのは、日本で間接的に女性差別がまかり通っているということではないか、などといった意見が相次ぎました。
