The United States and Britain have stressed their joint commitment to the military and reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan, ahead of the presidential election scheduled for August 20th.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and British Foreign Secretary David Miliband met in Washington on Wednesday saying they will continue to support the country.

"We will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder in pursuit of our common objectives. I also want to state publicly what I mentioned to the foreign secretary: my admiration for the incredible courage, service and sacrifice of the British troops."

"Those elections need to be credible and I think they will be especially important because they are a chance to reaffirm that our purpose in Afghanistan is to support a credible, democratic Afghan government."
191 British soldiers have died in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001. The figure is greater than the 171 deaths of British personnel in Iraq.
Clinton also says the United States has been talking to other countries about the importance of additional financial assistance from countries like Japan.

米英両国は、８月２０日に予定されているアフガニスタンでの大統領選挙に先立ち、アフガニスタンへの軍事及び復興支援に向けて、いっそう連携を強化していくことを強調しました。
アメリカのクリントン国務長官とイギリスのミリバンド外相は、水曜日にワシントンで会談し、アフガニスタンへの支援を続けることで一致しました。

「われわれは共通の目標を追求するために、今後も継続して共に協力していきます。また、（ミリバンド）外相にお伝えしたことをみなさんにも申し上げたい。イギリス軍の多大な勇気と貢献、そして犠牲をたたえます。」

「今回の選挙は非常に重要なものであり公正に行われなければなりません。なぜならこれはアフガニスタンでの我々の目標が、信頼できる民主的な政権を支援することだということを再確認するための機会だからです。」
２００１年のアメリカ主導によるアフガン進攻以降の、英兵の犠牲者は１９１人にのぼり、イラクで犠牲となった英兵１７１人の数を上回っています。クリントン長官はまた、アメリカは日本など各国からの財政支援がいかに重要であるかについて各国と協議している、と述べました。
