006 Taiwan's death toll from typhoon tops 100

Taiwan's death toll from floods and landslides caused by a recent typhoon has topped 100. Rescue operations are underway for thousands of people still isolated in the southern mountains.

Taiwan's fire authorities say 107 people have been confirmed dead with 61 others missing since Typhoon Morakot swept through the island on Saturday, causing major landslides and swollen rivers.

More than 200 houses in Kaohsiung County, southern Taiwan, are believed to have been washed away by mudslides.

The authorities are investigating the extent of the disaster and searching for missing people in the area.

On Wednesday, police and the military rescued about 250 people by helicopter from remote mountainous villages that have been isolated since roads were cut off by mudslides and flooding.

Kaohsiung County says 4,000 people are still stranded in those villages.
