Scientific cognition and hypothesis
The scientific cognition can be stated as a nomological cognition, which aims a universal cognition that has predictive ability against unknown object.
Scientific proposition must be able to objectively define its truthfulness in principle at some day in the future.
Scientific cognition aims to elucidate laws that same phenomena happens under the same circumstance at any time and count incident that happens only once and can not principally reproducible for nothing.
This can also state at science that discuss history of nature such as a geometric history of earth, origins of life, evolution of life.
These sciences, although first describe the historical phenomenon by using research method of other field, must step up these stairs and find general laws among evolution of earth.
Even though life could come into existence in a one specific season in the history of earth, the problem is how to elucidate life could be generated, which implicitly postulated that same history goes off under the same circumstances.
Therefore, experimental study also plays an important role even in the field of study of historical science.}
Nomological cognition is achieved only through verifying a hypothesis experimentally.
Above proposition means that science does not consist of interpreting various phenomenon of already known, and before one interpretation becomes theory or law, primarily it needs to propose a hypothesis and verify experimentally again.
Because scientific proposition not treat/handle individual phenomenon, but treat nomological cognition against an object, its proposition contain not only contain already known phenomenon, but also contain rule or prediction against array of unknown phenomenon.
Therefore, its proposition can be checked by verifying its unknown phenomenon whether it agree with prediction of proposition.
Scientific theory, law, hypothesis must include an unambiguous and concrete content, which can be asked truth or false through experimentation.
Study of the classroom education heretofore, theory or hypothesis frequently does not have an ambiguous and concrete content, as a result, the truthfulness of its hypothesis could not be determined by experiments.
Scientific theory or law has an existence value because it has prophetic ability to unknown concrete phenomenon, and hypothesis has only reason for existence aspiring such law or theory.
A hypothesis is called a theory or law when its truthfulness is thought to be confirmed by the correspondence of a strain of experimental facts.
Because scientific theme prescribe and predict unknown unlimited phenomenon on the basis of already experienced limited one, its truthfulness should not absolutely be able to guaranteed in principle, however, according to the saying of the lessons of scientific history, it is clear that theory or law which is confirmed by only a few experiments of well considered have enormously large currency and effectiveness.
However, on the other hand, uncritical acceptance of above stated theory or law discovered by limited experimental facts frequently invoke serious error/mistake, that is the facts on the history of science. Thus, it is impossible to logically prescribe a balance between these.
Each laws of Newton’s dynamics established from comparably a few experiments, and confirmed its truthfulness and effectiveness by becoming fundamental of many theoretical or experimental studies whereafter, it is also well known case that its limitation is elucidated by relativism or quantum mechanics.
It is important not to forget that when a hypothesis become to be called a law or theory, its truthfulness has limitation. This is basically important for scientific education.
There is two type of hypothesis; (A) although its truthfulness is difficult to verify directly over a long period of time, a theory is established under assumption of the hypothesis that is tentatively true, and (B) although its truthfulness is comparably easy to verify directly, a hypothesis is formed temporally or descriptive purpose as a method for asking positively.
Working hypothesis is a hypothesis which would confirm experimentally when the study is at least done and finish their thesis. Working hypothesis is temporally and conveniently established to ask object.
Thus, the presence of such (working) hypothesis is not generally conscious, usually hypothesis means former, in other word, hypothesis mostly indicated like “Avogadro’s hypothesis” or “light-wave hypothesis”, which they do not have certified by experiment for many years, however, suppose the hypothesis is tentatively true, and then established the theory that is useful for developing study.
However, the author decided dares to include working hypothesis as one of the hypothesis, from the view point that hypothesis generally play a critical role for scientific cognition.
I have to mention for the difference between hypothesis and prediction because that can frequently be an argument, hypothesis is predicting establishment of general big or small theory or law, on the other hand, prediction is a judgment for unknown phenomenon.
“Tomorrow would be a fine day” is an individual judgment, though it is a prediction but it can not be a hypothesis.
However, a thought “this theory could be composed, then that would happen” is a hypothesis and prediction based on that, this uprightness of hypothesis is admitted through confirmation of prediction, which based on that hypothesis are all correct.
In addition, Newton stated famous word on the history of science that “I don’t make any hypothesis” (non fingo hypothese) , however, this words were for considering Cartesian scholars and their hypothesis means “things that can not verify by experiment”。
Newton himself remains intimate study for light’s photon hypothesis and so on.
Prediction or hypothesis have the positive effect of shed a light on the side of nature (object) that can not be able to cognize only by touching external or occasional nature (object) by asking its truthfulness.
Nature (object) that a man could be known exteriorly and accidentally /by its appearance and chance, in many cases, extremely monochromatic, and for other side of nature (object), it could inclined/mostly not to be perceived unless actively learn/search.
For example, from the daily experience, this ground is flat and hard to think it is spherical.
Sun seems to go around us (the Earth), it is hard to think this ground (the Earth) is moving.
It is because a man lives in small part of big Earth, it is impossible to view from the outside the Earth.
In this way/As mentioned, setting of prediction and hypothesis allow right /correct judgment over the one-sided judgment by the facts given coincidentally and monochromatically.
In many case, it can not unambiguously be concluded how can it construe from array of facts of already known and which theory or law should be constructed/lead. It requires verification through new experiment to judge which of these construe are true.
Originally, it is generally difficult to draw on/evolve correct theory from the limited objects to right/correct theory that include unlimited prescription/provision/regulation by once and unambiguous, and usually it remains many possibility of interpretation although how many already known facts exist, thus, that require experimental verification next, science is, frequently misunderstand, not evolved by the form of “facts to theory”, but evolve only by the repeating form of “hypothesis to experiment (facts) to hypothesis to experiment (facts)”
It is same in the case of science education.
The method which shows an array of experimental facts first, and then end with inductively forming a theory was thought to be an idealistic one for inductive education (nal) method and widely used, although experimental facts shown at first could no matter how typical it were, how to comprehend that facts is usually not decided unambiguously.
At least it is thought to be.
It is not a rare case even students who know few about the thing to be teach have simple common sense view/way of thinking/ about its object.
In many case, that is not logical and elusive to such extent that they change their interpretation according to its time and occasion.
Then when students are shown new “experimental” facts first, not negligible numbers of them conceive the idea of some new interpretation which manages to enclose the new facts, based on their common-sense thinking.
However, a textbook or teacher do not conceder such thing and conclude such as “these experimental facts suggest...” and posture that there exist nothing other than the conclusion.
This becomes a stiff intrusive enforcement using “experimental” facts, thus it is no surprise that students feel something unconvincing in their mind.
Comparing this, a type of overt enforcement which say “Remember this, because scientist’s study conclude so” is much less harmful for the extent that would not deprive the will of thinking students themselves.
Experiment is a conscious and proactive activity which asks the nature by governing nature and self, aiming cognition of nature.
Although this was already mentioned in the first part, it seemed to reconsider/ pick up related to significance of hypothesis and experiment about science and science education.
It seems not negligible number of confusion induced by misunderstanding of the essence of ‘experiment’ in science education heretofore.
Above proposition tried to propose that experiment means not just activating experimental instrument and inducing natural phenomenon, as generally thought to be.
Even if the experimental instruments were activated, it would not said to be experiments if the action is based on independence, which ask the nature with sense of purpose have not established.
Although if a chimpanzee or a child activates experimental apparatus, it is obvious that that is not an experiment for them, however, we also have to take care of traditional school lab class “experiment”, which basically nothing more in many cases.
Either teacher’s experiment or student experiment, a lot of students do not understand why using such instrument, such performing such “experiment”, and what kind of idea would be verified by the “experiment”, but just seeing the “experiment”, moving their foot and hands according to the instruction given.
To make truly deserving of the name of the experiment of science education, these experiments must be clearly cognized that these are with sense of purpose, which means asking nature pros or cons, for all students.
In other words, before every experiment, prediction (Hypothesis) must be made by every student, thus one can ask the nature.
The meaning of one could be able to understand meaning of a conception and contents of law/theory formed by these conceptions adequately is that one can correctly predict an unknown phenomenon included in the field by using these concept or law,.
Scientific theory or law is expressed in comparatively simple words, therefore it is relatively easy to memorize these expressions.
However, these theory or law includes all the result of every study heretofore about that, thus in many case, it is not easy to understand its content.
Therefore, science education requires informing what matters to for the theory or law, and what kind of predictability they have for specific facts.
Then, for our science education goal, problems, which is for educational goal, shall be given repeatedly as many times as needed, i.e.; repeating the process of prediction, experiment, prediction, experiment, again and again until finally all the student become correctly predicting the result of the experiment by using its concept and law.
Otherwise, it is hard to say making all the children acquired the concept or law aimed to teach at least in class for sure.
