This primer highlights structured analytic techniques—some widely used in the private sector and academia, some unique to the intelligence profession. It is not a comprehensive overview of how intelligence officers conduct analysis. Rather, the primer highlights how structured analytic techniques can help one challenge judgments, identify mental mindsets, stimulate creativity, and manage uncertainty. In short, incorporating regular use oftechniques such as these can enable one to structure thinking for wrestling with difficult questions.

この文書は、Structured Analytic Techniques について書かれている。Structured Analytic Techniques とは、民間企業や学術界で広く使われている技術であり、諜報活動に特有の事柄も多い。しかし、この文書は諜報活動における情報分析について基礎的な事柄をまとめたものではない。むしろ、一般的な意思決定、マインドセットの決定、創造的活動、または不確定要素の多いマネジメント業務を行うにあたり、如何に Structured Analytic Techniques を役立てるか、ということに主眼を置いている。すなわち、組織内で起こる様々な無理難題に対する処方箋なのだ。
