英語でいうとwhatとwhoだね。

エスペラントのkiuもwhoと同じで、関係詞になるの。
whoと違ってkiuは人にも物にも使えるのよ。

kiuはwhoとwhichを兼ねるわけだな。
また、前置詞と組み合わせると関係副詞の代わりにもなる。ともに例を挙げておこう。

La romano, kiun vi pruntedonis al mi, estas tre interesa. あなたが貸してくれた小説はとても面白い。
Mi eniris en la domon, el kiu ili eliris. 彼らが出てきた建物に私は入った。

関係詞節kiun vi pruntedonis al miの始めと終わりにカンマが来ているね。これは英語と違うみたい……。
あ、でもカンマを付けることでどこからどこまでが関係詞節か分かりやすくなるから、誤解が少なくなるね。
ところで、下の例文のelって何かな……？

これは前置詞で、「～の中から」という意味よ。
fromとかout ofに近いものがあるわね。

下の例文の関係節はもともとkiu ili eliris el la domonだよね。
先行詞のla domonが前に移動すると、la domon, kiu ili eliris elになる。
このときelが関係詞kiuの前に行って、la domon, el kiu ili elirisになる。
……ややこしいね。

英語にもJapan is the country which many people live inという言い方と、Japan is the country in which many people liveという言い方があるな。
英語が分かればエスペラントの関係詞もわかりやすい。
