The Irish “D” Original is surprisingly hard to find. My usual sources for Samuel Gawith snuffs, My Smoking Shop UK and Green’s of Leeds, carry the “light’ version of this snuff but not the Original. I don’t know why this is so. I wound up ordering some from Rajek’s in Germany, the necessity of which seems strange to me. It’s like being able to buy Camel Filters at the local drugstore but having to go to Canada to get the nonfilters.

This snuff at first resembles American snuffs, however blasphemous it may seem to say so. It’s extremely fineground and dry, like windowsill dust. As such, it’s difficult to take, but worth the practice required. There’s an initial rush of the asphalt-y barbecue flavor one associates with American snuffs, though milder and faster-fading. That aroma dissipates very quickly, leaving behind the toasted-tobacco flavor that High Toast users are accustomed to— mild and slightly nutty. This two-stage flavor sets it apart from any other HDT I know of.

Provided one can actually ingest enough of a pinch, the nicotine level is fairly high, and will not pass unnoticed. This is not a suitable snuff for beginners, as it’s too easy to oversniff, leaving the poor newcomer thinking that all snuff causes coughing and eye-watering sinus pain.
