Gawith’s Peppermint Dark is black and coarse, and is so moist as to actually be a little sticky to the touch. The peppermint scent predominates and has a sweet, liqueurish quality. The underlying note of tobacco is faint.
The mintiness of this snuff is not as strong as some others in the Gawith line, notably Mastiff and Wild Duck, and has a warmer quality than one might expect. The afterblow leaves a pure peppermint aroma which actually seems a little stronger than the initial intake itself. The scent lasts several minutes even after blowing, though not overpoweringly so.
There’s hardly any burn at all with Peppermint Dark, and the nicotine seems to be in the low-medium range. It’s a bit clumsy to use due to its stickiness; I have a little trouble getting it off my fingers. The coarseness and high moisture make it impossible to oversniff; in fact, it takes a forceful snort to ingest this snuff.
A bit gummy for all-day use, it will coat the mucosa with a soft tarry residue. For peppermint fans, it’s a must-try, though not amongst the best Gawith has to offer, in my opinion. A beginner would have no trouble taking this snuff, but would likely soon weary of its one-note, candied flavor.
