1. Hōnen (法然, May 13, 1133 – February 29, 1212) is the religious reformer and founder of the first independent branch of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism called Jōdo shū (浄土宗, "The Pure Land School").
Master Honen,Founder Priest of Jodo Shu, devoted his whole life solely to teaching people the virtue of chanting [nenbutsu] or the name od Amida Buddha.
2. Before Master Honen established Jodo Shu, it was widely believed that only a handful of people such as top elites and those who had been accumulating spritual practices could be saved in Buddhism.
3. He did not think that such teaching of Buddhism would meet the true wish of Amida Buddha which is to save all sentient beings. He taught that one can be saved and be reborn in the pure land, not by one's own ability or personality, but by the virtue of reciting Amida Buddha's name.
4. Chion-in, the Head Temple of Jodo Shu, was constructed at the place where Master Honen established Jodo Shu and entered into nirvana, and it is the spritual base for great many followers of Jodo Shu to this day.
