<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">ザラメを加えたラテを少し口に含んで食事の終わりとして、改めて周囲の光景に目をやった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">アメリカの某都市から始まり、世界中に展開しているというそのコーヒーチェーン店には、私と同じくらいの年頃の少年少女が多く見受けられた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">港湾都市発の喫茶店と言う事で、デザイン性の高いもやい綱や羅針盤が描かれた店内の装飾は、茶系の落ち着いた配色となっている。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">そこに時折見受けられる、緑のロゴや橙色のほやをかぶせたランプなんかが、丁度良いアクセントとなっていた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">カウンターの向こう側では店員が忙しく動き回り、休日の煩雑な状況をさばいている。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">たまにカウンター内部の、ミルクを泡立てる機械から上がるスチームのような音が、店内のざわめきを圧して響いてきた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">某ファーストフード店と同様に『俗悪な資本主義の象徴』なんて批判を時に耳にするこの喫茶店の内部は、コーヒーショップと言う割にクリームの甘い香りの方が強い。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">休日の昼間には、遊びにきた若者や家族連れが他の通りからやってきて昼食を取るために、ことさらに賑わっている。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">そんな通りの一角。両隣りをファミリーレストランとファーストフード店に挟まれている、道路に面したコーヒーショップ。そこに私はいた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">往来を映すガラス張りの傍に席をとり、この場所を指定した相手を待っている。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">うつ向けた視線の先では、ガラスの向こう側から差し込む、弱い冬の陽光が机の上にかかっていた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">そこに手をかざして太陽の存在を感じとりながら、忙しく人や車が行き来する往来に目をやる。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">手前の歩道には、ひしめくというには些か数が足りないけれど、絶え間ない人の流れがガラス一枚挟んだすぐそこにあった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">その向こう側の車道の方は、今度こそ文字通り車がひしめき合っていて、隙間らしい隙間が見当たらない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">ガラスの端に見える信号は、青になっている筈なのに、まるで全車両がエンジンを切って駐車しているかのようだった。高校生の私でさえも道路行政の不備を疑う程の混雑だ。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">視界は、歩道に面して並ぶ雑多な飲食店の看板と店舗の入口で終わりを迎える。その先は建造物で遮られていたが、ガラスの上部と店の天井の合間にほんの少しだけ空が見えた。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">小屋の端の方ではトラ吉が小さく喉を鳴らしていたが、それに対して僅かな意識を割くこともせず、彼だけを見つめる。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">私の心臓は、いよいよ迎えたその時に、料理の達人が千切りをするような速度のリズムを刻んでいた。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">親しい人間がいない彼を、男さんと仲直りするように説得できるのは、同じ飼育委員であると同時に二人が決別する場面を目撃してしまった私をおいて他にはいない。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">問題は、私が、誰かを仲直りさせるために説得する、なんていう重大事に真正面から真剣に向き合った経験が、皆無であるという事。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">失敗は怖いけれど、それでも・・・・・・男さんとの関係を、半分は自分の意思で終えた彼の心には、私が抱いているのと同じ寂しさがあった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">わかりあえる人間がいない、孤独な感覚。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">それに気付いていながら、そして二人の修羅場を目撃していながら、見なかったふりをして当たり前の日常を送るなんて事は、できなかった。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">当然の如く私達は、ドキリとした表情でお互いに向けていた視線をそらし、今まで纏っていた真剣な雰囲気を隠そうとした。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">幸いと言うべきなのか、日中一杯の仕事で疲れた顔をした彼女は、そんな二人の緊張感などまるで気付かない様子である。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">そんな光景に私は、『彼は「せっかく二人が話し合うところだったのに余計な所で邪魔しないでほしい」と言っております』とよほど通訳してしまおうかと悩んだ。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">ここで裏方さんを巻き込んでもややこしい事になるだけだという考えが働いたのだ。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">私の視線の先では、すっかり機嫌を損ねてしまったトラ吉が、全身を脱力させたようにしてほし草に横たわっている。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">実際私と同僚君は飼育当番以外では殆ど接点がない。そのため、放課後の小屋掃除の機会を逃してしまえば次のチャンスまで、まるまる一週間待たなければいけない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">さらに用務員さんの突然の乱入が物語るとおり、学校ならばどこであれ、知り合いに目撃される危険があるのだ。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">だとすればここは一旦引いて、後日確実に日時と場所を決めた上で、知人を巻き込む心配のない所で話をする方がベターであるように感じられた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">多分、同僚君もそういう意味でここを指定したのだろう。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">先に来ていた男の人の方が突然立ち上がったかと思うと腕を押え、それを女の人の方が真剣な表情で構っていた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">正確を期した言い方をすれば、二人とも男女と言うよりかは少年少女と言った方が適当な年格好である。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">今は多少落ち着いたのか、先程までのような大げさなアクションはせずに、お互いちゃんと席に着いている。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">彼等の会話に耳をそばだてると、『エターナルフォースブリザード』とか『直死の覚醒』とか『カノッサ機関』なんて断片的な単語が、店内の雑多な音の中から拾いだせた。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">ここにいるのは、今回のバレンタインで初めて彼氏彼女ができたという、私と同じ高校生くらいの少年少女ばかりである。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">周囲のカップルはほとんどが自分たちの世界に浸りきって、私と言う異常を認識していないのが唯一の救いと言えば救いだった。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;">喫茶店そのものが拒絶しているかのような居心地の悪さを感じては、それから逃れるため別のなにかに意識を集中し、集中がきれては居心地の悪さを感じるという繰り返しを味わっていた。</span></div>
