I. Houjuu-ji (Jodo shu) 法住寺(浄土宗)



Comment        論評

    The survey of this temple was conducted by visiting and personally touring the temple grounds, and interviewing a random male on the premises (who was not a member of the congregation) and the head priest of Houjuu-ji.

    Houjuu-ji in its current state dates back to 1960. Originally built in Osaka in 1599 AD, on June 3, 1945 the original structure was burnt down due to air raids during World War II and rebuilt at its current location in Suita city in the 1960's. Houjuu-ji consists of 4 buildings, a garage, a small shrine to Jizou, the traditional-style Hon-dou or main hall (figure 18), and a modern style annex which has facilities for the parishioners and living space for the abbot and his family. The garage is massive, the Hon-dou and the shrine to Jizou being built on top of it. The temple grounds are inaccessible except for staircases in the front and back and an elevated tunnel from the annex.


    この寺の調査は、訪問して、個人的に、寺の構内と現場の間を見学して、一人の境内にいる無作為の男性(当人は檀家員では在りません)と法住寺の住職に会見しました。
    現状の法住寺は1960年までさかのぼります。 元々、西暦1599年に大阪で組立していて、元の構造は、1945年6月3日に、空襲第二次世界大戦の空襲ので、全焼して、1960年代に大阪府、吹田市 で現在の位置で再建されました。 法住寺の境内は4つの建物:車庫、日限地蔵尊の小さい祭殿、伝統的な建築の正面の本堂(写真#18)、庫裏が有って便所が有って控室が有る近代的な別館で 有ります。車庫はデカくて、車庫の上に日限地蔵尊祭殿と本堂が建てられた。前と逆の階段と別館からの高架橋を除いて、寺の構内は入る事が出来ません。



Regular Events        通常の出来事

    On the fourth Sunday of every month, after a 6:00 AM "shakyou-e" there is a service in which Amida is worshipped and a sermon is given to the parishioners. Some people come late and only come for the service. Between the shakyou-e and the service, snacks and tea are eaten and the parishioners gather and chat in the space outside the main room of the hon-dou. People who are not finished with copying the heart sutra are permitted to continue during the chanting portion of the service. Leftovers are brought in and distributed among the people still copying the Heart Sutra. Among the parts chanted are the Nembutsu and the Heart Sutra. The sermon is given by the abbot and explanatory handouts are distributed if necessary. The sermon can be about Buddhist history, morality, proper methods of worship or general religious topics. The Shakyou-e and service are free but donations are welcome.

    The temple is usually not so active, but a staging base of operations. The abbot usually spends most of his time off-grounds visiting members of the congregation at their homes for personal services and collecting of donations. 

    The temple is also one of the locations where the "gojuusouden" is held. The Gojuusouden is a Jodo-shu practice held once every 15 years or so. For five whole days the congregation gathers and the "oshie" or doctrine/canon is explained to the parishioners. The symbols and practices are explained in explicit detail. The gojuusouden lasts from 9:00- 17:00 every day. A lecture is given but questions may be asked afterwards.

    Many memorial tablets are put on display in the main hall in memory of the tragically deceased. (figure 36)


毎月の第4日曜日に、午前6時の写経会の後に阿弥陀仏が礼拝されていて、説教が檀家に垂れる。 数人が写経会をサボると阿弥陀仏礼拝と説教だけ出席します。 写経会と礼拝の間に、檀家は、本堂の主な部屋の外に有る間に集まって、軽食と緑茶が頂いて、喋ります。 般若心経をまだ写している人は勤行の誦経の分に、写経を続けます。 般若心経をまだ写している人に、軽食の残物が配られます。 勤行で誦経された経は“念仏”や“般若心経”等です。住職が 説教を行うと必要なら、関係する説明書を配ります。 説教の話題は、仏教の歴史、や、道徳、や、正しい礼拝方法、や、概念的な宗教的な話題、等です。写経会と勤行は無料ですが、布施は受け取ります。


上記ほど、法住寺の構内は大抵活動が無い;寺は本拠です。大抵、住職は構外に檀家の家に往診して、勤行を行ったり、布施を集めたりします。

この寺は、五重相伝が有ります。浄土宗だけ五重相伝という儀式が有る、伍重相伝は15年間おきに起きます。五日間も、檀家が毎日集まると、教えが説明され ました。浄土宗の象徴と常例が説明詳しく説明されます。五重相伝は毎日午前9じから午後5じです。講義の後に質問が問います。

Special Holidays         特別な休日

    O-bon is celebrated on the temple grounds. Parishioners wait in the annex until room is available in the hon-dou. A parishioner holds a long, flat stick called a "touba" (figure 22) on which the names of the ancestors are written along with "Namu Amida Butsu". "Namu Amida Butsu" is written at the top of the touba; written in tategana from left to right is the name of the ancestor while alive, the "houmyo" (posthumous Buddhist title), and the date of death.

    On Jizou’s day (August 24th) children gather at the Jizou. A giant rosary-like object called the "hyakumanben juzukuri" (figure 24) is held and passed along the hands of the children (figure 26). A "kamishibai" or picture-story-show is presented for the children's entertainment. The kamishibai is usually about old folk tales or Japanese history.

お盆は寺で行われます.。 本堂は込んでいたら檀家が本堂を利用可能になるまで、別館で待ちます。 檀家は先祖の名前が“南無阿弥陀仏”と共に書かれている“塔婆”(#22写真)と呼ばれる長くて、平坦 な棒を持っています。 "南無阿弥陀仏"は塔婆の先端で書かれています; 左から右まで縦書に書かれていて、一人の先祖の一生の具合、死ぬ時の“法名”、死亡の日が有ります。

地蔵の日(8月24日)に、子供は地蔵像で集まります。 "百万遍数珠くり "(#24写真)は、子供(#26写真の様です)の手に沿って握られて、渡されます。 紙芝居が子供の一興のために提示されます。 紙芝居は通常、昔話、とか国史、等です。




Remarkable Practices             顕著な習慣

    The shrine to Jizou (figure 7) is dedicated solely to Jizou so it may be used regardless of sect. People who are unhappy or sick may pray to Jizou at the shrine from relief. The shrine to Jizou is a "Higiri Jizou son", which required worshippers to come every day for a time period they decided at night when it was pitch black.  One of the practices associated with Jizou shrines is the Hyakkai, or walking in a circle clockwise around the Jizou shrine. The Hyakkai is not taken literally, if you are unable to circumnavigate the shrine to Jizou 100 times then it is acceptable to do as many as health or time permits. In the original layout in the Osaka location there was a "hyakudoisi" for use in the hyakkai. Instead of walking around the Jizou shrine, one would walk back and forth between the Jizou shrine and a designated marker stone.
    On the fourth Sunday of every month, a "shakyou-e", or sutra copying session, and "houyou" or Buddhist service is held. The sutra that is copied is the Hannya Shingyo or Heart Sutra. The participants gather at 6:00 AM in the Hon-dou. Before entering the main room of the hon-dou, one purifies himself with holy powder (figure 28) . At the shakyou-e the participants sit seiza position at small desks upon which a "sumi" ink block, a stone (or metal?) ink well, and brush are placed along with a copy of the Heart Sutra and tracing paper. A participant grinds one own ink and mixes it with water and traces the kanji characters from a kanbun original. The Heart Sutra is copied by the parishioners to fulfill a wish. The copyist's wish is written on a designated line of the Heart Sutra copy. The copies of the Heart Sutra are placed upon the altar before the image of Amida. (figure 21) The Shakyou-e and service are free but donations are welcome.

    地蔵の祭殿は地蔵専用なので、宗派が関係無くて、誰でもが地蔵祭殿で礼拝出来ます。悲しい人又は病気な人が安心に成りに、地蔵祭殿で礼拝しま す。この地蔵祭殿は、特に“日限地蔵尊”で有る;日限地蔵尊の正しい礼拝仕方は毎晩信者が真っ黒の時に来ます。外の地蔵に関連し て習慣は“百回”、右回りで地蔵祭殿を歩く習慣です。若し、具合あるいは時間だから100回丁度歩けなければ、何回でも良いで す。元は大阪の構内は百回の利用の百度石が有りました。信者が地蔵祭殿を回らずに信者が地蔵祭殿から“百度石”と表示された石ま で100回通います。


    毎月、第四日曜日、写経会の法要が有ります。写経会で写された経は般若心経です。参加者は午前6時に本堂で集まります。本堂の主な室を入る前 に信者が自分達で聖粉体で清めます。写経会で、参加者が墨と硯と筆と儀刑と透写紙で有る低い机で正座で座ります。参加者は自分達で墨を作ると漢文の儀刑か ら漢字を写します。望が適いに般若心経が写されます。参加者の望みは般若心経の儀刑に表示された所に書かれました。終えた般若心経は阿弥陀仏像の前に置き ました。(#21写真)写経会と勤行は無料ですが、布施は受け取ります。



Community Interaction            共同体相互作用

    The abbot used to also work part-time as a tutor. For a donation, the children of parishioners could be dropped off at the temple for supervision and help with schoolwork. The children were taught meditation and would would meditate before beginning work. However this service has not been available in recent years.

過去に、住職は家教にも働きました。寄付を与えてから、檀家の親は監修と学業の監修の為、子供をお寺に委せる。子供は黙想を教えられてから勉強の始まる前に黙想をします。しかし、最近、お寺の学習塾は有りません。
