Bamboo is the most familiar material for making ribs, particularly for the fan-ribs by using painting ande calligraphy. Shadi means remove the crud within the surface of the bamboo bedding and make teeny thick dots on it having special tool, Pingdi means polish the entire surface, Liuqing means leave a few of the green surface at this raised parts.
