The Battle of Belleau Wood occurred during the German 1918 Spring Offensive. In March 1918 the German Army launched a series of attacks on the Western Front, hoping to defeat the Allies before U.S. forces could be fully deployed. In May, the 3rd U.S.Division held the German advance at Château-Thierry. The German Army advance turned right towards Vaux and Belleau Wood.On 1 June, Château-Thierry and Vaux fell, and German troops moved into Belleau Wood.

The Battle of Caporetto, also known as the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo or the Battle of Karfreit, took place from 24 October to 19 November 1917, near the town of Kobarid on the Austro-Italian front. Austro-Hungarian forces, reinforced by German units, were able to break into the Italian front line and rout the Italian army, which had practically no mobile reserves. The battle was a demonstration of the effectiveness of the use of stormtroopers and the infiltration tactics. The use of poison gas by the Germans played a key role in the collapse of the Italian Second Army.

The Battle of Tannenberg was an engagement between the Russian Empire and the German Empire in the first days of World War I. The Russian First and Second Armies fought against the German Eighth Army between 23 August and 30 August 1914. The battle resulted in the almost complete destruction of the Russian Second Army. A series of follow-up battles destroyed the majority of the First Army as well, and kept the Russians off-balance until the spring of 1915. The battle is notable particularly for a number of rapid movements of complete German corps by train, allowing a single German army to concentrate forces against each Russian army in turn.

The Gorlice–Tarnów Offensive started as a minor German offensive to relieve Russian pressure on the Austro-Hungarians to their south on the Eastern Front, but resulted in the total collapse of the Russian lines and their retreat far into Russia. The continued series of actions lasted the majority of the campaigning season for 1915, starting in early May and only ending due to bad weather in October. After a heavy artillery bombardment, German Commander August von Mackensen launched an attack which caught the Russians by surprise. The Russians were forced to withdraw, the Central Powers recaptured most of Galicia, and the Russian threat to Austria-Hungary was averted.

The Ottomans sent cavalry to stop the British advance, and there were many battles between the British infantry and the Ottoman cavalry between November 7 and 9. The British attacked Basra and within an hour the remaining Ottoman troops were defeated and Basra was occupied.
