Mikie Sherrill (Mikie Sherrill, born January 19, 1972) is an American politician, former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot, and attorney serving as the U.S. representative for New Jersey’s 11th congressional district since 2019.
A member of the Democratic Party, her district covers a swath of northern New Jersey, including some of Newark’s suburbs and the western part of Jersey City. She is currently the Democratic nominee in the 2025 New Jersey gubernatorial election.
Career history
Early Life and Education
Sherrill was born on January 19, 1972. She graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree. She later earned a Master of Science from the London School of Economics and a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center.
Military Career
Sherrill served in the United States Navy from 1994 to 2003 as a helicopter pilot, achieving the rank of lieutenant. During her time at the Naval Academy, she was involved in a 1994 cheating scandal where she was accused of failing to report classmates who had cheated on an exam. As a result, she was not allowed to walk with her graduating class at the commencement ceremony, and her name was not included in the program, though she graduated and was commissioned as an officer in the Navy. Her husband, Jason Hedberg, was also caught up in the incident and was one of nearly 50 midshipmen who sued the Naval Academy, the Navy, and the Pentagon. The lawsuit alleged that the school denied due process and compelled incriminating statements under orders from superiors. Hedberg’s name was included in the 1994 ceremony program, indicating he participated in the ceremony three months after the lawsuit was filed.[1]
Legal Career
After retiring from the Navy, Sherrill worked as a federal prosecutor.
Political Career
Sherrill was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 and has represented New Jersey’s 11th congressional district since 2019. She focuses on issues such as national security, veterans’ affairs, and infrastructure.
However, in the 2025 New Jersey gubernatorial election, she was criticized for “focusing too heavily on criticizing President Trump and not discussing her own policies.” It was also claimed that “what they (Democrats) are offering voters is high taxes.”[2]

2025 Gubernatorial Campaign
In 2025, Sherrill ran for governor of New Jersey.
She won the Democratic primary in June 2025. In the general election, she faced Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli (a businessman and former state assemblyman).

During the campaign, signs of declining support among black and Hispanic voters in urban areas were observed. In majority-Black municipalities, she received only 16% of the Democratic primary vote, compared to 34% statewide.
According to Oscar James II, a black former Democratic Newark City Councilman, “Mikie Sherrill is disregarding connections with general voters and the black community.”[2]
CCP
According to campaign finance records,
Democratic U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill received over $65,000 in campaign funds (for her New Jersey gubernatorial activities) from Pin Ni, a businessman linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Pin Ni’s company is part of the Wanxiang Group. The founder (Lu Guanqiu) and his family were members of the CCP.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill also received campaign contributions from CCP-linked businessman Pin Ni in her congressional elections.
Experts criticized U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s acceptance of these donations as “allowing him to buy into the political influence game” and stated that she is “disqualified.”[3]
The campaign became contentious.
Ciattarelli threatened to sue Sherrill for accusing him of profiting from the opioid crisis through his former medical publishing company.[3]
